Be a risk taker

Hello you wonderful people! I think I’m ready to readjust my blog a bit. Saturdays have been designated as Featured Celeb Dress for Less posts, but I have lost a bit of the thrill in them. Because I don’t generally wear expensive pieces, I figure my own personal style posts are dress for lesses in themselves, and I will start showing some of my celebrity and designer inspirations in those. Instead, I want to experiment with “advice” posts on Saturdays. I’ve always wanted this blog to be more of a lifestyle website rather than solely fashion and beauty with the occasional green living. I’m inspired by Martha and Oprah and their ability to encourage people to “live better,” and while I’m no expert, I do have a few tricks up my sleeve. So, I hope you bear with me as I pass on a few tips on fashion, life, love, etc. over the next few months!

The first tip I want to give you all has to do with developing your own personal style. I am no Coco Chanel; over the span of my life I have had to experiment and question who I am and what style speaks to me at the moment. I’ve gone from athletic clothes, to a wardrobe entirely comprised of PacSun wear, to California beach bum, to somewhere between retro/romantic/alternative now. The only way I could discover what I liked was to experiment. When I was in grade school I was paralyzed with the fear of people thinking I was a “poser” (lol I haven’t heard that word in years now, I wonder what today’s equivalent is?). I only changed my look when I changed schools – how many years I wasted! After realizing that I had succumbed to my pride and concerned myself more with how other people saw me rather than what brought me joy, I’ve only taken risks and dressed for myself – and now I’m more stylish than ever.

My advice then to you is this: whenever you update your closets, pick one item that would stretch you to wear. Whether it’s choosing a color you’ve shied away from, a dress when you live in pants, an edgier shoe or that chunky necklace you’ve been dying to try but aren’t quite sure about: get it (and if you don’t want to risk a lot of $ into it, go to Ross like I did!). Start by wearing it around the house. Get comfortable in it. Show it off to some close friends. Then wear it out. You may discover that you look absolutely amazing in that pencil skirt or the color green. Or, you may find out that that pair of gold lamé leggings aren’t meant for you (*cough cough*). This is the only way you will truly develop a sense of style, and c’mon, we all deserve more than an oversized tee and ill fitting mom jeans.
