A couple of days ago I took some time to browse through Style.com’s beauty icons. There is just something about the 1930s-50s that really speaks to me…women like Greta Garbo, Gloria Guinness, Maria Felix, Bette Davis, etc. knew true poise and style. Beyond fashion, I absolutely love the hairstyles of those periods. That’s why today I wanted to show you a quick and easy way to achieve some bangin’ curls using hot rollers (which I HIGHLY recommend you investing in!).
Maybe it is because my mom grew up in Ohio, but we’ve always been a roller kind of family. Wet sets or hot, I became an avid user. Curling irons were torture devices in comparison. I think that the art and use of rollers has slowly ebbed away (except by professionals), so I’m determined to convince you all to at least give them a go on your own. But enough talk, check out this video I put together for you (and I must really love you all, because being seen in rollers is NOT my best side, lol).
Here are my results after brushing it out a little more:
Is this a look you would try? Was my tutorial easy enough to follow? Are there any hairstyles you would like me to tackle for you? Let me know!

Hey Maria I love hot rollers too, they really give a soft elegant curl to the hair. Great job on the video

Thanks Nichole! It’s just so much easier when you are on the go too…I only use a curling iron if I want a few of my ends to flip around these days.

Thanks for this! I’m totally in the mood to curl my hair today…I hope the non-heated rollers work as well! What kind of hot rollers are you using? There are so many on the market and the last time I curled my hair I used Conair’s Hot Sticks back in the 80′s!!

Non-heated are great to sleep in overnight. I just recommend looking for at least 1″ ones if you do use them, because they tend to create verryyyy tight curls.

Oops, I’m using Conair Instant Heat – it comes in three different sizes!

ohh I love this!
I have naturally curly hair though, so this doesn’t really work on my hair without having to straighten it first…and it literally takes an hour to straighten my hair!

What you could try doing is using a straightening serum in your wet hair and blow dry it using a round brush to get it as straight as possible. Then from there even if you have some wave in it left (my hair is naturally wavy, with curls in the back), you can still use the hot rollers to smooth and create a nice curl

I love it, it looks gorgeous too! I remember an uncomfortable night spent in rollers and I woke up looking hilarious. Maybe I should give it another try…

Me too! I used to use these 1/2″ foam ones from the 80s and ended up looking like a bad Shirley Temple hahaha. Hot rollers are so much better, and if you go with a larger size you get much softer curls.
