While I love trying new trends, the harem pant was one I put off for as long as possible. Yet another 80s style that has come back to tease, confuse, and intrigue us, it has risen to new popularity in the last year. I at first balked at the idea of wearing anything that essentially creates more volume at the hips and tapers down into a skinny pant, but I couldn’t help but smile at the playful, exotic shape (my husband had recently returned from a trip to India, where a similar shape is anything but out of place and available in many festive colors, and I loved it). So, when Urban Outfitter’s reduced their price on a pair of black harem pants to $14.99, I decided now was as good of a time as any to try it out.
I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t end up looking like MC Hammer. Instead, the results were somewhat Audrey Hepburn-ish elegant. I paired the pants with simple, pointy toed ballet flats, American Apparel’s double U neck white tee, and tried a vintage red lip and curls.
I think what also helped this outfit out is the fact that these particular harem pants don’t have too low of a crotch. In fact it almost fits more like a trouser pant with pleating. I recommend the everyday person to try a version like this.
Silly faces are recommended when trying a piece like this. I added chunky gold and amber jewelry to give it some sparkle. I’m not completely sold on this outfit, but it was fun to try. What’s your take on harem pants? Let me know if you have any suggestions!

That’s you in the first picture? i thought it was an ad. great shot! personally, i hate the idea of trendy harem pants. but you managed to make these look very french chic. But I thought harem pants were more billowy through the leg and fitted at the ankles? Am i wrong?

I think you look cute in harem pants, but in general I hate them because they are so obnoxious!

Thanks guys! I’ve been trying my hand at photography to capture more interesting pictures:)
Arielle – these are a much milder harem cut, with a higher crotch. As mentioned, I think it is a more complimentary version for people to try versus the extreme drop-crotch.
Emmy – I agree it is not a look for everyone! But I am warming up to them a bit.
