I am always torn on what to wear during the holidays. Half of me wants to be as cozy as possible in order to fully enjoy my day off. The other half knows that photos will almost certainly be taken, and I have had enough memories of me looking awkward to last a lifetime. So how can one be both fashionable and comfortable at the same time? The outfit that I put together for this year’s Thanksgiving fits the bill:

This season there has been an onslaught of retro cut dresses reminiscent of the 40s and 50s. This dress has a vintage feel to it with a slight kimono sleeve that I adore. Paired with black tights and black patent pumps, a peacock feather cuff and creamy belt, it is both sophisticated and relaxed at the same time.

Paired with a purple cardi with ruffle details
For your holiday outfit, I encourage you not being afraid of color. Rich jewel tones, harvest reds, oranges, and yellows add life to the festivities. Be careful not to look cliché: choose one color and build neutrals around it or choose complimentary colors (see this post for more help on color pairing http://www.bachmanssparrow.com/blog/personal/a-helping-hand-be-bold/) rather than pairing multiples together. You don’t want to look like a cartoon turkey.

Makeup Details; keep it basic for holidays with the family
I took this opportunity to try out an orange shade of lipstick, something I’ve been wanting to do since seeing it come to popularity over the last year. I choose a shade that had a bit of pink in it so as to not be too overwhelming, and I really enjoyed the effect it had with my green dress! Adding warmth and color into your wardrobe and makeup helps make the dreary weather gain new life, but make sure to aim for sophistication over the extreme. Enjoy!

well, I just did some shopping at H&M, and normally I would just go with safe, basics of black and some neutral grays and browns, but I got a robin’s egg blue as well as a really nice purple and black button up. I’l keep looking to add to the wardrobe but am working on embracing colors.. for me it comes down to how comfortable are you with what you wear… can you own it? I don’t do pink but purple.. lets start with baby steps…

Men with olive skin tones can pull off color very well, so I encourage you to take risks! I’m sure what you got will look great. Forest greens and mustard yellow would also be good options to try:)
