I have to say I have never been this excited over a fashion trend before. I think it has something to do with my ongoing battle between style and comfort that makes the explosion of leggings on the runways such a joy for me. As a child I was never the most stylish of kids. In fact, I never wore jeans until I was in the sixth grade. Instead, everyday you would see me in a pair of spandex leggings in heather grey, navy blue, or classic black. Oh, and did I mention I would pair them with bulky Nikes or Vans? Not so cute.
As I bought into the skinny jeans trend (and still continue to) I longed for those days as a child when I could move freely as a I pleased compared to my Levi wearing counterparts. Then came Fall 2009 with its glorious leggings, and I knew I found the answer to my restricted thighs’ dilemma. This season designers have taken the somewhat boring staple item and turned it into a chic, statement piece. Sequins, leather, studs and ridiculously loud patterns look oh so perfect paired under basic tunics and dresses. Here are just a few examples of my favorite legging transformations:
1. Rachel Pally - the texture of these black ruched leggings keeps them far from boring

2. Rag and Bone – The combination of textiles in these leather leggings gives them an inverted riding pant feel

3. LnA – these bright leggings come in an assortment of colors (my favorite: the neon blue and bold red)

4. Siwy – I LOVE LOVE LOVE these gold sequin leggings, so hot.

5. Alexander McQueen – all hail the rock fashion king.

A few tips on wearing these beautiful pieces: leggings are not pants, if we see your crotch or bum-a-lum it’s all over. The busier and louder the legging, the more subtle and basic the rest of your pieces should be. Avoid awkward lengths; no more knee length or middle of the calve leggings please. Enjoy!
