Her name was Lola…

I’ve been on the lookout for new silk scarves to use as turbans lately with no luck. Maybe it’s just me being lazy, but after not finding any great ones on my latest thrifting adventures, I decided the most affordable route was to purchase a piece of cloth from my local fabric store and call it a day. I found this lovely tropical printed silk on sale for $4.99 a yard – when I got home I cut it into a 30″x30″ square, and voila! A new turban! Paired with a thrifted BCBG high-waisted skirt, green tank, Lux knitted 3/4 sleeve sweater, and these strappy sandals, I think it’s a great mix of classy and bohemian.

Love the pleating here, and simple construction elements that makes a standard pencil skirt look more interesting.

Beneficial for the vertically impaired AND surprisingly comfortable? Love these!

While I was at the fabric shop having my silk yards cut out, one of the employees struck up a conversation with me about DIY projects. He mentioned that he creates Victorian dresses for the local Dickens fair (I’ve only been to it once during Christmas, but it is definitely a riot and worth seeing if you are in the Bay Area). It was a pleasure to see that a male my age had such a passion for sewing and design, and to know that the people working there were fellow crafters. I challenge you to ask an shop worker what projects they are working on the next time you visit your local craft store, it just may inspire you!

PS – Here’s my video tutorial on how to tie a turban.
