The other day as I was browsing Anthropologie, I came across this lovely bib rope necklace. I thought it was pretty and quirky, and would be perfect with spring’s stripes and all-American tailored looks. But, I was definitely not in the mood to pay $42 for something I could easily make myself (considering I don’t make jewelry, this was wishful thinking on my part). I decided to head to Ace Hardware (in ruffles of all choices – definitely received a few raised eyebrows), and picked up some rope. From there I put together this little tutorial on how to make a fun, knotted rope accessory to share with you all for under $15. Enjoy!
What you will need:
- Cotton Rope
- Thread
- A sewing needle
- Pins
- Beads or trinkets to decorate the necklace
- Jewelry clasps
Step One:
Because I wanted a thicker rope like the one used in the Anthropologie necklace, I sewed two strands of rope together. If you don’t need to do this step, simply cut out about a yard of rope.
Step Two:
Pin the rope into the shape you want it to be. The shape I used here is a circle, five loops, and another circle. You can make yours look more bunched and knotted like the Anthropologie necklace opposed to my more symmetrical style. Don’t get discouraged if it takes you a couple of times to pin it exactly how you would like!
Step Three:
Sew your pinned rope into shape. I just did simple hand stitches, nothing fancy.
Step four:
Once your rope is sewn into shape, figure out what placement you would like to arrange your beads or trinkets. I choose these gold-ish amber colored beads to keep the natural nautical feeling going.
Step Five:
Attach your embellishments with simple hand stitches. I wish I had colored thread to blend better with my beads, but you live and learn.
Step Six:
Sew the ends of your rope to keep it from fraying too much. Finally, attach your jewelry clasps.
Voila! A trendy little rope necklace. I think if I were to do it again I would keep it a bit more haphazard and bunched like the Anthropologie necklace, and find a different type of rope, but i do like the way it turned out:
I paired mine with a striped sweater from H&M’s blue line, love it!
So, what do you think about wearing unconventional materials as accessories? Is this a project you would attempt? What outfit would you pair this piece with? Have any other projects you would like me to try and attack? Let me know!

It really was fun! A bit time consumer sewing the two ropes together though, next time I’m definitely just looking for a thicker cord.

Thank you! I think it’s a little less “there’s a rope around my neck” and a little more bib like, but I like the type of rope they used better I think.

I’ve always had a weird desire to wear unconventional materials as fashion accessories, like headphones or utility cables as a belt. hahahaha that’s kind of comical though which is why I’ve never done it! lol

I say go for it…it’s better to take risks and have at least your own form of style than being boring!

oo I love this. I’m an absolute failure when it comes to DIY so I rarely give things a go but I’m tempted to have a go at doing this, it looks easy and cute.
