Dark lips, shake those hips

Dark lips at Jason Wu's spring 2010 show

The other day on the Styleist.com there was an article on dark lips as a spring trend. Now I’ve seen the black/plum lipstick trend during the fall/winter seasons, but for bright and sunny spring? I wasn’t quite sold on it. Now if you’ve been following my blog for awhile, you’ll know one of my New Year’s resolutions was to take more risks with my makeup. So, I decided to make a run to RiteAid, pick up myself a deep plum shade, and try it out myself. This is what I ended up with:

I have to admit, I actually kind of love it. I think because it’s not a black but more of an eggplant color, it’s much more chic and feminine than I thought it would be. While I don’t think it’s an easy shade to wear around on a regular basis, I do think it’s a fun alternative when I want something a bit more sophisticated.

I do have some suggestions on how to wear darker lipcolors and look glam rather than goth. First off, keep the rest of your makeup warm. Pairing pale skin with a dark lip is a no no (at least in spring); instead I wore a rosey colored blush along with a hint of bronzer (per Nichole!) to keep the look cheerful and lively. I also paired it with taupe colored eyeshadow to keep from competing with the strong lip.

Pair it with colorful pieces of clothing. You’ll notice in the Jason Wu look, he maintains the spring aspect by combining it with shades of orange and yellow in her outfit. I picked a seersucker top and a light orange hair accessory to keep my look light and fresh.

Finally, to keep my lips from looking dull and to give it a bit more dimension, I layered a rosey gloss over it. Here are the products I used:

Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipstick in "Va Va Violet," Kirkland (that's right, Costco brand!) by Borghese mineral lipgloss in "Berry Hot"

Bonus! RiteAid was having a sale, buy one Revlon lipstick and get a nail polish for free. I picked up "Red Hot Tamale," a reddish orange color.

How do you feel about dark lipstick, especially during the spring time? Is this a look you would try? I’ve seen it successfully on all skin-tones, but do you think certain people should stay away from it? Let me know!
