Hello babycakes, it’s time for another installment of my Saturday Advice “column.” I think the opinionated side of me is really excited with this new venture! While I do want to delve into more topics beyond fashion eventually, another style tip is just dying to escape. So, this week I want to tackle the topic of how to demolish those days of feeling frumpy and boring. We all have those moments of caving in and throwing a sweatshirt over an ugly top, pulling on a pair of ill fitting jeans (or sweats, *gasp!*), and calling it a day. Whether it’s because you have run out of time to get ready, simply can’t think of an outfit to put together, or have a million other things that are consuming your attention, it just happens. Here’s my advice to you on how not to fall into the trap of a “bad outfit” day:
Always have a standby outfit on hand.

A prepared outfit by Bachman’s Sparrow featuring Bottega Veneta cardigans
That’s right, I’m telling you to set aside a whole outfit that when push comes to shove you can pull on in a minute’s notice. Whenever you have free time, put together a mini “kit” of all the things you would need for your basic, yet well-put together outfit: undergarments, a pair of dark wash jeans, a simple, printed, cotton shirt, and a sweet little cardigan or jacket for example. Set it aside in your closet so that it doesn’t get mixed in with the rest of your weekly used clothes. Update it according to season, and remake it when those rushed moments cause you to utilize it. Now you have no excuse for looking sloppy!
Has everyday become a “bad outfit” day (I know it’s hard especially for the mamas out there)? Put together outfits at night or create a few days worths of looks when you have a breather. Don’t make it too complicated: stick with your basics and accessorize with jewelry, scarves, hair decor, and bags to change it up.

I like to plan my outfits for the week on Sundays–its maybe a little bit OCD (and I don’t Always stick to them, sometimes I get in the mood to wear something else) but it ensures that I always have a cute outfit set aside for each day, no matter how busy I am. I love the idea of having an “emergency” go to outfit, I think I’ll add that to my weekly rotation =)

It’s smart, esp. when you don’t have a lot of time to get ready! When I was in school I used to do this too (same with my dinners – I’d freeze them until I needed them).

I just started reading your blog, and really enjoy it! Great tip, I am always scrambling in the morning to find something to wear, not a morning person…lol.

I use Polyvore too! I’m so OCD about my outfits. I always leave the house in something I know even if I’ve literally thrown it on in five minutes, will look good. Even when my jogging bottoms are calling out to me to just wear to the shop, I can’t do it. You NEVER know who’ll you run into. Love this advice column idea. Wonderful dear

when i was in school i would plan out my outfits for the entire week. the best part was the start of the semester when all your clothes were new!
now, since i get up early for work, i take out my outfit the night before when i have time to think about what i’m wearing instead of just throwing something on because it’s 5 in the morning!
great column!

Thanks girl! I think it’s actually pretty fun planning out outfits for a whole week, it kind of makes you excited and you have something to look forward to, if that makes sense

haha. I need to put together three outfits a day. First one: It is casual, can get dirty, have in home appointments with and still do cleaning with. Second One: thise one can take me out of the house for events and store runs and lastly Third one… pajamas… Sadly, I retire many nights in my nice outfit because I fall asleep before I have time to “get ready” for bed. I love putting together the outfits, now if I could just fit back into my clothes.
BTW- TK sorry
) But I love this idea of emergency go to outfit too!!!

I feel ya! That’s why I’m training myself when I shop to get a bunch of cute basics – everyday might not be a wow outfit day, but at least everyday can be a presentable day!
