I think it all started with years of wearing variations of blues, blacks, and browns that spurred my obsession with color. During my gradeschool years I was a pretty shy girl, and I think that really showed itself in my color palette – talk about boring! When I realized I was devoid of a spectrum of hues in my wardrobe, I made an effort to not buy any neutrals, but get color, color, color! I began mixing my base colors with candy colored confections – still pretty safe, but at least I was making progress.
Now I’m all about color combinations. When done well, I think pairing colorful pieces does wonders for one’s style sensibilities. You look cheerful, full of vigor, and totally chic. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about those neutral days, but for the sake of spring: get colorful!
Every since my dark lips post, I have been totally inspired by this Jason Wu look. I love the vintage/classic look of it, with the bold yellow and green paired with a plum lip. Here’s how I did the look, for less!
Anthropologie sweater $88.00 and shorts $78.00; Urban Outfitters sunglasses $10 and gold sandals $20; checkered ribbon from Joanns $5
I love the lattice design on this sweater – super sweet and a little bit vintage. The shorts have the perfect amount of fullness to them – not too much that my butt looks out of control! (PS – I’m sooo happy short short shorts are not all the rave anymore, can anyone say wedgie?). I hot rolled my hair and pinned it up to give a little retro feel to the look, and tied on a ribbon. I stuck with a strappy sandal so as not to compete with the already bold clothing pieces, and a simple bracelet. My rule of thumb when it comes to color combos: if it appears in nature, then you are probably fine (for example, green leaves and yellow flowers).
What color palette do you fall into – neutrals, bolds, pastels, etc.? Are you liking my outfit, or is it too bright for your taste? And do you agree with me on the shorts’ length?! Let me know!

Wow Maria I love this post, my new goal for myself is to buy more color ….no more black! Recently my friend and I were shopping and I bought this orange & white top that I fell in love with so slowly I’m adding color. Yellow is my favorite color & I just adore those shorts, when I’m skinny I’m gonna have to rock some like them!!

Get it girl! I usually am not a fan of orange on me myself, but I tried it out again (as seen on today’s post) and I’m loving it! Can’t wait to see how amazing it looks on YOU!

i so agree with you about the shorts! even though i love my legs, short shorts just always felt too revealing for me–even now i still mostly wear skirts in the summers.
also, i love this color combo–yellow is my favorite color, so its nice to have license to mix it with more colorful options (usually I pair it with white, maroon, or navy)

Thanks girl! It was so frustrating for awhile there because it seemed like all my options were short shorts or Bermudas, so I just gave up for a few years. Sooo happy that isn’t the case anymore!

Gorgeous! I go through phases–in college I had so much color (I don’t think I had a single plain black, white, or brown top until I graduated), but now I generally have more neutrals since it’s easier for office wear. I would definitely (try to) rock that outfit though!

I love this!! It’s such a cute yet simple outfit/idea. I’m not afraid of color but I tend to stick to my favorite: a bluish green/teal. I wear it almost every day, even if it’s only my nailpolish.

I seriously had a year where that was the only color I really wore lol! I really want a great nail polish in that color, have any suggestions?

this is such a sweet look! You are beautiful, I love the springy color combo, and the hair is amazing.
I used to wear a lot of neutrals, too, pretty much until I started blogging and being inspired and empowered by other ladies ;]
