Be bold, mix bright colors!

I think it all started with years of wearing variations of blues, blacks, and browns that spurred my obsession with color. During my gradeschool years I was a pretty shy girl, and I think that really showed itself in my color palette – talk about boring! When I realized I was devoid of a spectrum of hues in my wardrobe, I made an effort to not buy any neutrals, but get color, color, color! I began mixing my base colors with candy colored confections – still pretty safe, but at least I was making progress.

Now I’m all about color combinations. When done well, I think pairing colorful pieces does wonders for one’s style sensibilities. You look cheerful, full of vigor, and totally chic. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about those neutral days, but for the sake of spring: get colorful!

Jason Wu Spring RTW 2010

Every since my dark lips post, I have been totally inspired by this Jason Wu look. I love the vintage/classic look of it, with the bold yellow and green paired with a plum lip. Here’s how I did the look, for less!

Anthropologie sweater $88.00 and shorts $78.00; Urban Outfitters sunglasses $10 and gold sandals $20; checkered ribbon from Joanns $5

I love the lattice design on this sweater – super sweet and a little bit vintage. The shorts have the perfect amount of fullness to them – not too much that my butt looks out of control! (PS – I’m sooo happy short short shorts are not all the rave anymore, can anyone say wedgie?). I hot rolled my hair and pinned it up to give a little retro feel to the look, and tied on a ribbon. I stuck with a strappy sandal so as not to compete with the already bold clothing pieces, and a simple bracelet. My rule of thumb when it comes to color combos: if it appears in nature, then you are probably fine (for example, green leaves and yellow flowers).

What color palette do you fall into – neutrals, bolds, pastels, etc.? Are you liking my outfit, or is it too bright for your taste? And do you agree with me on the shorts’ length?! Let me know!
