For the sake of this post, I will expose one of my biggest weaknesses – horribly chapped lips. Everyday it’s a battle: I’m heavily armed with chapstick, lipslicks, lip glosses and Vaseline, but the dryness never fails to sneak up on me. Recently I came across this “green” remedy – an exfoliation of olive oil and sugar. After getting olive oil all over my bathroom counters (actually, it wasn’t so bad, olive oil is a great way to add shine to a hard surface!), I finally tried out the remedy and fell in love. It gently yet effectively helped get rid of most of my dead skin, leaving me with smooth lips. Here’s how to do it yourself!
What you will need:
- Olive Oil
- Sugar
- A Toothbrush
You can do this one of two ways. What I did was pour a little OO on my finger and apply it to my lips, then placed some sugar on my finger and applied it on top of the OO. What may be easier and less messy is finding a little container to combine the sugar and OO, and then sticking your toothbrush into the mixture.
Either way, once the two ingredients are applied, take your soft bristled tooth brush and firmly brush your lips. Personally I gave up on the toothbrush and just used my finger, it seemed to be more effective and less harsh on my skin. Reapply the ingredients once more and brush again, then rinse off with water. I immediately followed this routine with a smooth chapstick (I’m loving Blistex Complete Moisture).
Voila! Smooth lips that also have a nice color to them due to stimulating the blood circulation. Every time I wear lipstick I’m doing this routine beforehand to get a nice, even color with no stragglies. Enjoy!

ooh awesome post! I will have to give this a try. I just rub my lip in the shower to get rid of the dead skin. This might work better. I use carmex and aquaphor(annaliese told me about this one) to get my lips from drying out. Those tend to be on the greasy side. I’ll only use those at night and chapsticks during the day.
PS- My clarisonic finally shipped and will be here tomorrow! I’ll see how it goes. Maria, you should get one too! so you can share with your husband!

It was funny because I just saw an ad for it the other day and was wondering if you ever got it! Let me know how it goes

This would have been perfect for a recent trip to Japan – my first – which was fueled with visits to convenience stores and pharmacies in a search for the “right” lip balm.
My lips were always getting chapped and nothing was working with their climate and my skin. This easy solution (using a soft bristled toothbrush) would be helpful for any traveler. Thanks!

Oh man, switching from one climate type to another is never fun on my skin too. I’m glad this post helps!

Hello-I didn’t know how to email you so I figured writing on the latest post would do…I am working with the Bachman’s Sparrow for my masters research! I found your great blog by accident, but it tickles me that you named your website after my favorite little brown jobber! Huzzah! (I wonder about the adaptability comment in your ‘about’ page-they aren’t the most adaptable little buggers, and basically just like fire…)

Hi Emily! Wow, that’s pretty awesome, I didn’t know many people cared much about this little bird anymore
I’m glad you stopped on by and I hope to see your comments more often! About the adaptability – I was referring to sparrows in general. I love how despite the erection of concrete buildings in their habitat, they can build amazing (and sometimes pesky) nests within the structures. If you’ve ever been to the Napa Culinary School, they have these ENORMOUS nests all along the roof-line of the building!

This is great! I actually do this already but without the sugar and olive oil I just kinda brush my lips with my toothbrush, but this seems like it would work better!
love your site, btw
