Our bond to a good pair of jeans can become more intimate than any other relationship we might have. We see each other on a near daily basis, we conform to each other’s limits and boundaries, and nothing can pick you up like seeing how good your bum looks when properly supported. But a bad pair of jeans is quite the opposite. They often let you (quite literally) down with saggy butt-age, add odd ripples and crevices where no one should have them, or suck you in until your poor body piles out of the top. Honestly, it’s like a form of horrific torture. In response to the hunt I witnessed at the Style Exchange to discover the perfect pair of jeans, and the all too often discouragement and dejection from failing to do so, I will be taking both today and tomorrow to go over America’s favorite staple item and discuss the best cut for your beautiful, unique body shape. We’ll start off today with pear and inverted-pear shaped ladies, and follow up tomorrow with the curvy and not so curvy gals.
For women who are larger on top, or apple shaped: This is for those of you who have a larger chest or tummy, but not too much booty. DO NOT! wear narrow cut jeans such as a skinny fit or tapered jean (to be quite honest, NO ONE should wear tapered jeans). This will only accentuate the disproportion between your top and lower half. Instead, look for a cut that adds some volume such as a boot cut or a wide leg jean. Make sure they are well constructed and don’t have a loose fit or this will cause droopy bottom.

For women who are bigger on the bottom, or pear shaped: For you ladies, finding flattering jeans can be a bit of a struggle. Often the hip might fit, but the waist doesn’t or vice versa. Taken from What Not to Wear, it is not a bad idea to invest in a few good pairs of jeans that fit at the hip and are taken in at the tailor’s to fit the waist. Jeans are durable, and a good pair will last you a long time. That being said, try to stick to dark wash jeans with no bleaching around the hip region, and a straight leg cut with some stretch to it. This will both slim and add length to your legs. Also, avoid tunics (shirts that fall below the natural waist); this will over-emphasize your pear shape.
