Sutton from “Style, Substance, and Sutton” (soon to be “by Sutton”) has become one of my favorite blogging friends. A fellow DIYer, a classy dresser, and a cooking fiend to boot, it really is her sweet personality that keeps me coming back for more. Check out our interview below and stop on by her wonderful blog to share some love!

Looking pretty in lace

MV: Here we go! Tell us a bit about yourself! How old are you, where are you from, favorite band, food, and pass time?

S: I am 22 years old and a native of Colorado.  I was born and raised in the resort town of Telluride but have been living between Denver and Fort Collins for the last five years while attending Colorado State University.  I will be graduating this weekend with a major in Construction Management, random, I know.  Although this is far from fashion related I am moving to New York City this summer to peruse my dreams of working in editorials, and one day VOGUE!  My favorite foods include sushi, Thai, and classic cheese fondue with green apples, yum! Being a mountain girl my past times revolve around being outdoors, skiing, hiking, lots of yoga, farmers markets, and shopping.

Polka dot adventures

MV: What amazing goals! I can’t wait to see your journey there :) So when did you start blogging, and why?

S: I started blogging this past fall to fill a creative void in my life.  I never thought that I would become a “blogger”, but it just happened when my craving for fashion married my hobby of writing.  Blogging is a community full of instant gratification with daily posts from millions of online “friends”.  I love that aspect of it, but will always look forward to the middle of the month when the hard copies of my magazines arrive.  Im a little old school that way… I think I am the only 20-something who has an active library card, I just love the world of print.

MV: I agree that the community aspect of blogging really is amazing – even a bit addicting! What can people expect to find at your blog? What do you tend to focus on?

S: My blog revolves around personal style, interior design ideas, DIY projects, and lots of cooking.  My blog is attainable for all, not full of model bodies and pairs of $2000 shoes, although I do love drooling over blogs like that!  I also try to throw in some advice how you can maximize & incorporate trends into your wardrobe now.

Good enough to eat

MV: Your food pictures always get me drooling! I love asking this question, so I’ll pop it to you – would you say your online personality differs at all from your “real world” personality? Do you feel you can be yourself more online, vice versa, or are you pretty much the same?

S: My blog is a representation of my real life, however, my “real-life” friends aren’t big blog readers, so I don’t think they really get it.  But I created my blog for me, to get experience continually writing about fashion and to test if I truly want a job in editorials.  It is quite awkward at first, putting your life out on the web, but I have created quite a few friends via other blogs, and in the end, we are all in it together.

MV: Finally, what is one tip you have for bloggers?

S: A lot of blogs have hit superstar levels {Tavi, Sea of Shoes, What I Wore} and I think that a lot of people start blogs for that reason.  But my suggestion is that you make sure that you have original content that is unique to you and your blog ~ dont go out a copy Jane or Jessica.  And secondly, dont get frustrated with a lack of readers, the only way to break into the community is to be a reader yourself!
