We all have those love affairs that were once full of excitement and attraction, but have petered out and lost it’s thrill. What was beloved becomes ignored and uncared for. No, I’m not talking about our romance lives, but rather our relationships with our clothes. Those shirts, skirts, pants, etc. that caught our eye are now tucked away in the back of the closet, without a hope of being worn. That’s what happened to this tweed skirt I bought on sale at Arden B. perhaps over 5 years ago now:
If you know me, you’ll know I have a hard time letting go of my clothes. I always convince myself I will take the time to rework them; find a way to salvage the relationship if you will. Being a previously busy college attendee, and now a busy blogger, I never really get around to those projects because of time crunches. Well today I want to show you how to transform your clothes, with just a little effort, into interesting and renewed pieces by simply applying, you guessed it, buttons! Check it out:
What you will need:
- A needle and thread
- An assortment of buttons
- Scissors
- Highlighter
Step One:
Arrange your buttons in a pattern that you like. Place a small dot using the highlighter in each position, then remove the buttons.
Step Two:
Attach your buttons securely with basic stitches.
Step Three:
Add additional buttons (or beads) to create a cluster.
Voila, you are done! Here’s how my skirt came out:
Just a supppperrrr easy way to add interest to old clothes! You can also use beads for a more gem-like appliqué, and go crazy with your patterns. Enjoy!
How do you bring new life to old clothes? Is this a project you could tackle? And are you a pack rat like me? Let me know!

The end result is just phenomenal – in fact, I like it better with the buttons than without. Your DIY’s are truly the best!
Sadly, I can’t even thread a needle, so this is too difficult for me. Luckily, I’m not longer much of a pack rat – I have gotten far better at giving away clothes that I no longer wear!!

You’re so sweet! I’ve gotten “better,” but I still convince myself all the time to just hold on hahaha!
