Add a little Alexander Wang to your closet without breaking the bank

alexander wang spring 2010

I’m always inspired by Alexander Wang. I just am blown away by how he takes fairly basic pieces and makes them amazing with creative accents. If you’ve been reading Bachman’s Sparrow for awhile now, you’ll know that I was particularly enamored by his Spring 2010 collection. I love the way he mixed a sweatshirt material with leather to create ultra chic sportswear that not only looks great but is super comfortable. As the fall weather continues to creep upon us, I’ve been on the hunt for great pullovers. Sweatshirts are not the most fashion-forward items, but with this quick appliqué tutorial you can take a boring piece and make it Wang worthy. Enjoy!

What you will need:

  • A yard of faux leather fabric
  • Steam-a-Seam2 double stick fusible web
  • An iron
  • A pullover sweatshirt

pullover from Target, $19.99

Steam-a-Seam $3, faux leather fabric $4

You'll need an iron to bond the Steam-a-Seam permanently

Instructions:

Cut out two semi circles with a diameter of roughly 6 inches (I used a shoulder pad as an easy stencil) from your faux leather fabric. Apply plenty of the Steam-a-Seam to the back of each piece and place it onto the shoulders of your sweatshirt. With your iron on it’s medium setting, hold it on the semi-circles for roughly 10 seconds each. Once the bond has been set, iron over each piece several times. Once set, you’re all done!

Perfect for a lazy Sunday, or jazz it up with a jersey knit skirt and belt. Make it your own by trying out different designs and patterns (check out your favorite football team’s jerseys for inspiration)!

Are you a fan of the “high fashion sweatshirt” look? How would you style it? What pattern would you try? Let me know!
