This year we celebrated Labor Day with some amazing food and friends, with a dash of games and karaoke thrown in. Everyone brought their own meat to grill and a side dish to share – talk about good food overload! My contribution was butter steamed carrots with rosemary and brown sugar. Unfortunately I undercooked them a bit so there was still some crunch to them (better than too soft though, right??), but despite that, they tasted pretty darn good. Today I want to share you my recipe which I’m sure will be a hit at any dinner party – beyond tasting great, it smells and looks like heaven.
Ingredients:
- One carrot per person
- Brown sugar (1 tsp per carrot roughly)
- 2 tbsp butter
- Rosemary (I used about 2 tsp dried, but fresh sprigs would taste great and look Martha-approved)
Recipe:
Begin by cutting the carrots into thirds, and then again by their lengths to create 3″ sticks.
Next, spread butter along the bottom of a large pan, add the chopped carrots, and stir around until all of the carrots are thoroughly coated.
Next, sprinkle your brown sugar and rosemary over the glazed carrots and stir together. Lower the temperature to the medium setting, cover, and let sit for about 15 minutes or until tender. Enjoy!
What recipes are you loving right now? What are some great fall dishes? Let me know, I’m always in need of inspiration!

They were sooo good. I don’t think they were undercooked – they were just right.

I think this is a wonderful way to cook carrots. Carrots remind me of sweet potatoes and yams and can be flavored in similar ways and taste really good. I am really enjoying your photos, Maria.
