Layer up, men!

In the wild, males tend to be the most colorful and glamorous of their species. So, when I look around at many of the men of our kind, I’m always a bit surprised to see how little they put into their wardrobe. Jeans and sweatshirts, tees and sneakers, all in various shades of grey, brown, black, and white. I think that this slow decline of men’s fashion for the everyday guy is due to two reasons: they aren’t sure how to put an outfit together and are too self conscious to try, or they just don’t care. Well I’m here to say that women LOVE a guy who looks stylish but not overdone (because who wants to date a guy who dresses better than you do??). Today I will help you put together some laid back but utterly cool looks that you can easily replicate.

Cold seasons are the best time for you guys to show off their fashion sense because of your ability to layer. The following three looks rely on different textures to add interest:

Items in this set:
  • All Saints Boots
  • Converse Sneakers
  • Tilly’s and Pacsun Jeans and Bomber Jacket
  • Gap Sweater and Plaid Button Down
  • Hanes White Tee

This is a laid back look that is super easy to do. Begin with your basic tee and jeans. Add a button down plaid seen here in a great shade of green. A mustard yellow sweater compliments the dark washed jeans and green shirt nicely, and looks great on most guys. Pair it all with a basic cream scarf and a bomber jacket to give it some edge, and you’ve got a great outfit. Add and remove pieces according to the weather.

Items in this set:
  • Gap Blue Tee and Green Scarf
  • G-Star Jack Breeze Jeans
  • Topman Boots and Leather Jacket
  • American Eagle Mock Neck Sweater
  • Gene Metallic High Tops
  • Stuhrling Original Men’s ‘Apollo’ Automatic Watch

What I love about this outfit is the leather jacket and boots from Topman; they are incredible edgy. Pair them with a heather grey sweater and some basic dark wash jeans, and you have a layered look that is easy and not overdone. I threw in this awesome Stuhrling watch because every man should possess one statement watch.

Items in this set:
  • Bottega Armani Brogue shoe with tassel
  • Trousers from BrownsFashion.com
  • Emporium Armani black ties
  • Vera Bradley colorful ties
  • Brooks Brother’s bow ties
  • Land’s End Dress Shirt
  • Tilly Dress shirt s/s
  • French Connection from Asos.com boots
  • Topman.com hats

Every man should have a pair of casual trousers, a skinny black tie or a colorful bow tie, and a basic dress shirt in their closet. Totally simple, and very suave. Pair this outfit with some leather boots, and if you’re daring, a bowler hat, and you look totally European street rat chic.

If you aren’t ready to jump in to the fashion world just yet, try mixing up the basic tee by choosing brighter colors, interesting prints, and textural details and opting for a hoodie with graphics or a sweater over a pullover sweatshirt.

Are these options that you could do? Do you feel comfortable with trying new colors? Let me know!
