The Job Interview; taken from Big Fat Rat's photostream
Today I thought I would do things a little differently. Instead of having an inspired picture to start from, I wanted to focus on building a professional wardrobe without breaking the bank (thanks to my cousin Patrice’s question on my fanpage!). Right now job searching has become a major “pass time”, and first impressions really do matter. Looking well put together is just one more thing you can do to increase your odds of landing that job. I will show you certain pieces to invest in for two different job types: corporate and trendy/casual.
Corporate:
Click here to see each piece in detail. Choose a straight leg trouser and a pencil skirt in neutral colors so that you can easily mix-match outfits throughout the week. A nice, structured trench or blazer (I love this one because it isn’t so structured that it emasculates you and appears a bit more feminine) can be paired with either piece. I recommend choosing colorful blouses that have some nice detailing such as a ruffle or bow – while still workwear, it allows you to appear more friendly, approachable, and upbeat. Personally, kitten heels are more appropriate with skirts in the workplace, but feel free to pair a higher heel with a trouser (it gives you an in-charge appearance!). Pick a few light sweaters to layer and add interest to your outfit. Finally, when it comes to jewelry, keep it streamlined. Chunky bangles clanging against your desk spells disaster! Appearing professional without losing a sense of style is key here. You can get all of these pieces for under $600.
Trendy:
Click
here to see each piece in detail. If you are looking for a job in the creative industry, being able to show your ability to put yourself together is a huge bonus. While this is your chance for a little more freedom when it comes to your style choices, I do have a few recommendations. Pick pieces that are inspiring – perhaps a interesting cut like these wing-sleeves, a unique jacket, edgier heels, an amazing sheath dress, funky trousers, or an intriguing print. I love these dark washed, straight leg jeans for a basic look you can wear multiple days. I recommend sticking to somewhat neutral colors – perhaps it’s the designer in me, but the way I see it, you don’t want to “clash” with your work (this doesn’t apply to people in casual wear jobs such as teachers for example). This doesn’t mean wear only whites, blacks, and beiges, but choose colors that are subtler than neons

. I didn’t include jewelry in this collage, but I will say this: while you may have more liberty, don’t over-do it with the glam. You still want to appear professional. Above all else, keep it classy – don’t let you clothes become a distraction, but complimentary to your workplace. You can get all of these pieces for under $425.
I hope this helps you somewhat – I believe that looking and feeling good really boosts one’s confidence, which is so key in job searching. These are obviously my opinions, but I think that you can find some basic guidelines for building your workdrobe!
What are key pieces in your professional closet? Do you think how you present yourself appearance-wise helps in job interviews? What tips do you have for people going through the interviewing process? Let us know!

This really helps me a lot. I usually feel really boring and lacking style in the office, but you gave me some ideas on how to change it up. I like that I can get a few pieces to mix and match into a ton of outfits!

Great picks! I definitely second your statement above about getting your shirts with fun details…I find that my shirts with ruffles or pleats or dots get worn much much much much more than my plain shirts. Although, if you have the basics and are looking to add more fun stuff, plain shirts work well if your skirt or pants have more detail.
My office is a bit of a combo of these…I’m expected to be dressed for business for meetings, presentations, and such, but on a day to day basis I can wear business casual, including dressed-up jeans. I love love love your jacket picks for the trendy workplace–they go such a long way.
Presentation definitely matters in job interviews–not necessarily looks but definitely how you carry yourself. Let your personality shine through, and laugh a little…humor puts everyone a little more at ease. Having been on both sides of the interview table, how well a candidate’s personality would fit in with the rest of the team is often taken into account…a human (not stilted or overly guarded), friendly interaction can give you the edge in an otherwise equal race.

Great picks! I especially like the trendy category, I think you’re spot on with that one. I don’t know, I work in a trendy field and don’t have to worry too much about being corporate; and I don’t think I’d even know how to dress for a corporate interview, but I’ll definitely take style cues from the trendy category you posted. I especially love the batwing sleeve colorful printed blouse you have in the collage-beautiful.
