One of the fashion questions I received last week regarded the explosion of sequins on the runway. I really enjoyed this question because sequins are one of those trends that can go tragically wrong if worn incorrectly…And I’ve seen my fair share of some ugly glam (picture this: a 40 year old woman wearing a sequined beret, sequined work vest, AND jean pockets embellished with sequins?! The horror!). So in this post I will show you some of my favorite ways to wear sequins without falling into the trap of looking like a home project gone wrong.
Do wear sequins either as a short cocktail dress or embellished on a tank
Pair sequined pieces with a tailored trench coat, blazer, or trouser to give it a refined look. This helps it from appearing too whimsical or costume-y, and more like a statement piece. Keep accessories to a minimum and nothing too glamorous in order to keep from clashing and looking overdone.
Do wear sequins embellished on a blazer or vest for spiced up outerwear
These pieces make strong visuals, so pair them with basic shapes and simple pieces, such as a plain white tee and a bodycon dress.
Do accessories with sequin clutches in an array of colors and patterns
Don’t want to jump onto the sequin bandwagon full force? Pick up a sweet sequin clutch to add a little glitz to any outfit. I love how feminine and vintage these pieces are.
With sequins, there is such thing as too much. Avoid pairing multiple glittery items together, sequins that look cheaply attached, and combining more than three different colored sequins or apparel in one outfit. Enjoy!
